Regulatory Authority
The New York City Licensing Division, City of Buffalo, Office of Licenses, Consumer Protection Bureau, and the City of Yonkers mandate all debt collectors be licensed to operate in their respective cities.
Application Process
If you’d like more information about the application process, contact Cornerstone or visit the state regulating site, linked above.
Maintaining Licensing
In order to maintain the NYC license, debt collectors must renew it every two years. The renewal period and fees depend on when the initial application was filed. For Buffalo, you must renew the license every other year by 9/1. To maintain your license in Yonkers, you must renew annually by the anniversary date of approval. This involves submitting renewal applications, paying fees, and ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations. It is important to maintain great record keeping practices to ensure no questions about compliance arise.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Operating without proper licensing could result in fines or being prohibited from conducting business in the state.
