BACP license categories
The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection issues Chicago's business licenses in categories: the Limited Business License covers activities without a more specific category, and the Regulated Business License plus dozens of specialty licenses cover activities with added rules, food establishments, taverns, tobacco retail, valet parking, shared housing, and many more. Licenses generally run on two-year terms. The category determines requirements, inspections, and fees, so classification is step one of the application.
Zoning review is built in
Every application is checked against the zoning at the business address before a license issues, and home-based businesses apply under home occupation rules with their own limits. A lease signed before zoning is verified is the most common self-inflicted wound in Chicago licensing; BACP offers pre-application consultations for exactly that reason. Food businesses add health inspections, and public-facing categories can require public way use permits for signage and sidewalk features.

Does every Chicago business need a city license?
Most businesses physically operating in the city do, under the Limited Business License if nothing more specific applies. A narrow set of activities is exempt or licensed exclusively by the state, professions licensed by IDFPR among them, but retail, food, personal services, and most storefront businesses need the BACP license.
How long does a Chicago business license take?
Straightforward Limited Business License applications at compliant addresses can issue quickly; categories requiring inspections, food or liquor among them, run on the inspection schedule and take longer. Zoning problems are the largest source of delay.
Is Chicago's license the same as an Illinois business registration?
No. The city license comes from BACP; state registration with the Secretary of State and the Department of Revenue is separate and required regardless of the city license. Both layers must be current.
