What types of business licenses are there?

Business licenses sort into a handful of recognizable families, and knowing the families is the fastest way to figure out which ones apply to you. Most companies hold a mix: something local, something from the state, and for regulated fields, activity licenses that carry the real weight.

The main families

• General business registrations. The local business tax certificate or, in a few states, a statewide general license. Nearly universal, low cost, tied to the location.
• Activity licenses. State licenses for regulated fields: lending, debt collection, money transmission, insurance production, real estate, construction, food service, childcare, transportation. These have real applications, review, and often surety bonds.
• Professional licenses. Credentials held by individuals, doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, cosmetologists, sometimes paired with a firm-level license.
• Sales and tax registrations. Seller's permits and employer accounts. Technically registrations rather than licenses, but they sit on the same compliance calendar.
• Permits and endorsements. Narrow, condition-based approvals layered onto a license: health permits, liquor licenses, signage, zoning, home occupation permits.
• Federal licenses. A short list for nationally regulated activities such as alcohol production, firearms, aviation, and broadcasting.
