What are my responsibilities after getting a business license?

Getting the license starts the job; keeping it is the job. Every license carries ongoing responsibilities, and regulators treat them as conditions of holding the authorization: renew on time, keep information current, maintain any required bond, file the reports the license requires, and operate within the license's scope. A lapse in any of these can suspend the license and the business with it.

The recurring obligations

Renewals come first: every license has a cycle, annual or biennial most commonly, with fees and sometimes updated disclosures or continuing education. Amendments come second: changes of address, ownership, control persons, or trade names usually must be reported within a set window, and change of control often needs advance approval in regulated fields. Bonds and insurance third: where a license requires a surety bond, the bond must stay active and at the current required amount, since a canceled bond can invalidate the license automatically. Reporting fourth: regulated licenses add annual reports, financial statements, and activity reports on their own calendars.

Building the calendar

The failure mode is almost never a hard requirement; it is a missed date.
