Default judgment

A ruling entered against a party that fails to respond to a lawsuit in time. A common risk when service of process is missed.

A default judgment is a ruling entered against a party that fails to respond to a lawsuit within the required time. For a business, that often traces back to service of process that was delivered to a stale or unstaffed registered agent address and never reached the right person.

The risk is what makes a reliable agent valuable: prompt receipt and forwarding of legal notices gives a company the chance to respond before a deadline passes. Keeping the agent and registered office current is a basic safeguard against a case moving forward unnoticed.
