Most companies hold a mix from several families at once. Business licenses sort into a handful of recognizable families, and knowing the families is the fastest way to figure out which ones apply to you. Most companies hold a mix: something local, something from the state, and for regulated fields, activity licenses that carry the real weight. The main families General business registrations. The local business tax certificate or, in a few states, a statewide general license. Nearly universal, low cost, tied to the location. Activity licenses. State licenses for regulated fields: lending, debt collection, money transmission, insurance production, real estate, construction, food service, childcare, transportation. These have real applications, review, and often surety bonds. Professional licenses. Credentials held by individuals, doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, cosmetologists, sometimes paired with a firm-level license. Sales and tax registrations.
