It is the location on file with the state for delivering legal notices and official mail. Many states pair the registered agent and the registered office as a single requirement. The registered office must be a real address in the state, not a P.O. box. The registered office and the [Registered agent](/glossary/registered-agent) are two sides of the same requirement. The agent is who accepts documents, and the registered office is where they are accepted. States want a fixed, verifiable location inside their borders so [Service of process](/glossary/service-of-process) and compliance mail always reach a known place. That is why a P.O. box does not qualify: there has to be a person available at a street address to take delivery in person.
