# What is a credit grantor? *Reviewed 2026-07-29* ## Short answer A credit grantor is any business that extends credit to a customer, either by lending money or by letting the customer pay for goods or services over time. Banks, finance companies, retailers with charge programs, and medical or service providers that bill on installment terms are all credit grantors. The term matters because many states license credit grantors under retail installment, sales finance, or lending statutes. The label describes a role, not an industry. The original creditor on any account is the credit grantor: the bank that issued the card, the finance company that wrote the loan, or the retailer that sold the couch on a payment plan. In collections, the distinction matters because collecting for the original credit grantor is first-party work, while a third-party agency collecting on someone else's accounts usually needs a [Collection agency license](/glossary/collection-agency-license). Credit grantors carry their own licensing exposure.
